The User Interface - Past Solutions - Future Challenges

The "Business Computer" - The Benefits

i) Security of data
Firstly, as this is a server-centric architecture, then not only can the data be backed-up using tried and trusted utilities, but it can also be restored when part of a Business Continuity (Disaster Recovery) Plan.
Secondly, the data can be plexed, to provide hardware resilience.
Thirdly, virus checking software is more easily kept up to date, to allow checking of external data. Also, data off floppy disc would have to go through operational control, before getting onto your system.
Fourthly, user access is better controlled and simplified.

ii) Reliability of access
As the "Presentation Client" device is simple, then it is much more reliable. If there is a problem, then it can be replaced in a mattter of minutes, without losing any of the user's way of viewing their data. The lower network usage leads to more consistant response times, and less chance of network overload. Using load-balancing on the "Presentation Servers" also reduces bottlenecks, and provides yet more resilience.

iii) Rapid deployment of applications
Because, both the data and the application software are held on servers then upgrades are made more easy. Gone are the days of asking for ten copies of the CD-ROM to allow your 70 client PC's to be upgraded in parallel! If hardware upgrades are needed, then it is a small number of servers which require the extra plumbing, not the large number of clients.

iv) A flexible approach to new technologies
As a "Business Computer" architecture provides you with a framework, then it allows you to respond quickly, and take advantage of windows of opportunity. It also insulates you from faddism, and reduces the risk on your IT spend.

v) Your support staff stop fire-fighting and start exploiting.
Stop having your staff go from one crisis to the next, and start letting them use their expertise to exploit the new technologies. Let them "tune" existing technologies to the users' requirements. This will bring greater satisfaction to your users and your support staff, and give you business benefit.
